Birthdays and obsessions

Matt is 7!

And here he is with some of his favorite things. This picture was taken several months ago when his Pokemon fever started. The collection has gone from the 200 you see here to over 1000. No, nobody needs that many Pokemon cards.

Do most boys find a hobby or interest and really obsessively dig in? These cards were kind of all he thought about and wanted for the past 6 months. The 6 months before that he was all about Mario on the Wii. When he finished all the games he moved on to Pokemon. Before that it was Webkinz, Hotwheels, Thomas, in reverse order. What comes next for a 7 year old?

I totally love that he is passionate and focused. He carries this into sports and classroom too. But the consumerism, I can do without that. I have to stop myself in Target when I begin to say the naggy "Do you really NEED to spend your allowance on another Pokemon pack?". I don't want to be the mom that over-indulges but I also don't want to be the one that sucks the pleasure out of what he enjoys.

Anywhoo...anybody want his doubles (triples, quadruples)? We've got some extras.

  1. This must be what 7 year old boys do... My 7yo has just started this Pokemon fever... We can not figure out how to actually play the game but that doesn't stop him! He LOVES those silly little cards! Happy birthday to your son!

  2. Yes, we have gone through Pokemon and are now in the midst of Bakugan and Harry Potter. Kira and Jacob carry their "wands" around with them EVERYWHERE!
